SUMMARY:SRPC's Rural Reach Webinar - 'Performance Under Pressure'
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. Fil Gilic and Dr. Kavi Singh\, bring us “Performance Under Pressure” for the next Rural Reach Webinar. \nPlease note\, this is not an accredited event.\nFree for SRPC Members / $50 for General Admission\nDate: Thursday\, Aug 1\, 2024\nTime: 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)\n[click to convert to your local time]\nLocation: Zoom – The link will be in the confirmation email\nCan’t make it live? No worries! The session will be recorded and shared with registered attendees.\nDescription:\nPressure and acute stress can dismantle even the best of physicians. We will go over the physiology of stress and its effects on cognitive and physical performance; and the deliberate ways in which we can armour ourselves against its ill effects and “flip the script”- letting stress fuel our performance at times when it matters most. \nObjectives:\nReview a useful working model of human cognition. Review interactions between stress\, cognitive load and human performance. Use effective strategies to maintain cognitive performance in high-stress situations. \nPresenters:\nDr. Fil Gilic: Full time rural EM physician\, Kingston area\nSimulation Educator\, Queen’s University. Founder of RuralResus.com rural medical education website and courses. After a stint in the Canadian Forces as a paratrooper\, he tried to bike\, sail\, paddle and hike every type of environment he could find. He wandered the country as an itinerant ER doc until settling back to Kingston where he did his residency. He works in small towns around it while teaching across the nation. He tries to spend as much time in the outdoors with his two boys as he can muster. \nDr. Kavi Singh: Dr. Singh has worked for 25 years with the Inuit of Nunavik and the Cree of Eeyou Istchee (James Bay). From skidoo toboggan medevacs\, to unfreezing IV lines in his armpits in a twin otter\, he realized med school and residency didn’t quite prepare him for real life.  He has spent the last decade working on changing how acute care is approached and taught for austere environments.  Apart from paddling\, BJJ & being in the mountains\, he loves being with his young kids and wonderful wife.

SUMMARY:CHCA Project ECHO: Unpacking the Principles of a Palliative Approach to Care: Addressing Barriers to Care
DESCRIPTION:Description: Although palliative care is widely recognized in Canada\, many still lack access to the services and support needed to ensure a person’s quality of life before death. The availability of palliative home care programs and funding varies greatly across provinces\, making it difficult for many Canadians to benefit from these services—less than half of those in need receive them. A recent study in Victoria\, BC\, focused on “structurally vulnerable” and marginalized individuals\, examining ways to reduce their suffering and isolation in their final days. Home care providers are essential in overcoming these obstacles\, offering equitable and culturally sensitive palliative care. It is particularly crucial to identify and address the barriers faced by underserved communities\, such as those in rural areas\, minority groups\, and economically disadvantaged populations. By doing so\, caregivers can ensure that all Canadians have access to compassionate end-of-life care. This palliative care ECHO learning session will identify barriers and enablers for quality palliative care for vulnerable Canadians\, share recommendations for improving access to care for structurally vulnerable people and highlight the work of BC’s Palliative Outreach Resource Team (PORT) through a case study. \nTeaching Presentation: Dr. Kelli Stajduhar\, Professor\, School of Nursing and Institute of Aging & Lifelong Health\, University of Victoria\nCase Study Discussion: Kate Leahy\, RN Nurse Coordinator for the Palliative Outreach Resource Team (PORT)\, Victoria\, BC \nREGISTER HERE
