DESCRIPTION:Update on Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation – June 7\, 2024 \nA half-day small group “Update on Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation” workshop will be offered to trainees registered in a Canadian critical care training program as well as practicing intensivists and respiratory therapists. Participants will be able to choose from a selection of workshop topics to best suit their learning goals. Space is limited so be sure to register early. \nCanadian Critical Care Review – June 8-9\, 2024 \nThe CCCS is pleased to host the Canadian Critical Care Review (CCCR) for 2024 at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel. This vital critical care review course will follow our traditional format of learning\, and with the aid of interactive media\, participants will be able to anonymously assess their knowledge and readiness for the Royal College examination to help identify areas for ongoing development. \nThis year’s review course will focus on adult critical care medicine. Content will be made available to all learners after the course\, providing a valuable resource for exam preparation. To ensure registrants are able to review topics not covered in this year’s course\, applicable session recordings from the 2023 review course will also be made available. \nAs always\, the CCCS is committed to delivering a highly valued\, engaging program to meet the educational needs of critical care trainees\, practicing critical care nurses\, allied health professionals\, respiratory therapists and intensivists. Our goal is to address the challenges in preparing for the Royal College subspecialty examination in critical care as well as the challenges in maintaining competency in clinical professional practice.

This webinar\, featuring the guidelines’ clinical leads\, will provide an overview of the processes for developing the guidelines as well as highlights of some of the key recommendations. \nCCSMH is a national non-profit organization affiliated with the Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry. Specifically\, it describes the reaction to that which threatens the integrity of a person’s identity. Little research has been done on the clinical expression of this phenomenon\, even though\, from diagnosis to eventual death\, existential issues quietly\, and sometimes overtly\, dominant a palliative patient’s experience. \nThis session aims to introduce physicians to the concept of existential distress and provide an approach to identify and clarify the different aspects of this distress experienced by the dying person. \nEarly identification can enable timely intervention\, such as counselling\, spiritual guidance\, and dignity therapy. Such supports have been found to increase quality of life in the terminal phase of a person’s illness. \nIn this session\, we will: \n\nidentify the indicators and nuances of existential distress through case examples.\nappreciate the functional role existential distress plays at the end of life\, when to refer to psychosocial/spiritual care\, and how to support the dying person if these specialist resources are in short supply.
