SUMMARY:Webinar: Promising Practices That Support Retention of the Health Care Workforce in Northern\, Rural and Remote Communities (part two)
DESCRIPTION:There is a pressing need to support the health care workforce in order to strengthen and restore high-quality\, safe health care for everyone in Canada. Providers who work in northern\, rural and remote communities have unique challenges and associated support needs\, related to factors such as fewer onsite team members; geographic remoteness and associated weather and travel challenges; access to fewer providers\, specialists and facilities\, and to less equipment; a broader scope of practice compared with their urban counterparts; and a patient population that is — on average — more complex compared with patient populations in urban centres. \nThis webinar is part two of a two-part series\, presented by Healthcare Excellence Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information. It discusses: \n\nPromising practices that other communities have implemented to increase the retention of their health care workforce.\nKey success factors to embed community\, staff and Indigenous partnerships into retention approaches.\nPractices that promote improved work–life balance and wellness\, which contribute to retention of the health care workforce.\nStrategies that health care leaders are using to engage staff to develop solutions geared at retaining people in the health care workforce.\n\nRegister for part two  \nWatch the recording of part one

SUMMARY:Upcoming webinar: What can be done about hospital harm and patient safety in Canada?
DESCRIPTION:While most people cared for in Canada receive safe care\, unintended harm does happen. Hospital harm has been increasing and has only gotten worse since the pandemic started. This is not unique to Canada but is a global issue. A recent 2023 US study by David W. Bates\, MD\, and colleagues examined harm across 11 Massachusetts hospitals in 2018. They found that 23.6 percent of hospital admissions had at least one adverse event\, with 9 percent of admissions including an event that was serious\, life-threatening or fatal. \nJoin this discussion to hear more about the significance of these hospital harm findings\, and perspectives from Canada on what can be done to turn this trend around.  Together we can raise awareness and support from everyone involved in healthcare\, with tangible approaches for taking a proactive and holistic approach to patient safety\, ensuring that every patient receives safe and effective care. \nHost : Jennifer Zelmer\, President and CEO\, Healthcare Excellence Canada. \nPanelists : \n\nDavid Bates – Chief\, Brigham & Women’s Hospital\, Professor of Medicine\, Harvard Medical School\, Professor of Health Policy and Management\, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, Medical Director of Clinical and Quality Analysis\, Information Systems\, Mass General Brigham.\nRoss Baker – Emeritus Professor\, Institute of Health Policy\, Management and Evaluation\, University of Toronto.\nDoug Cochrane – Emeritus Professor of Surgery University of British Columbia\, Past Chair of the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council\nDonna Davis – Patient Partner\, Patients for Patient Safety Canada.\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Creating Culturally Safe-r Palliative Care Education for Indigenous Communities
DESCRIPTION:Creating Culturally Safe-r Palliative Care Education for Indigenous Communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 19\, 2023 from 1 to 2:00 p.m. ET \nThis session will showcase an educational initiative to increase Indigenous communities’ capacity to provide palliative care by offering culturally safer palliative care training for health and social care providers. The presentation will provide an overview of a suite of newly created curricula and resources developed at the Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health\, Lakehead University\, in partnership with Elders\, Indigenous organizations\, scholars and health and social care providers. \nThese tools recognize the diversity of Indigenous communities’ experiences\, knowledge\, and cultural teachings regarding health\, caregiving\, dying and death. As a result\, the content is not grounded in any Indigenous community’s practice or knowledge. Instead\, concepts from the Indigenous Wellness Framework are integrated with palliative care and chronic disease management with the goal being to provide a wholistic foundation for understanding health and balance while also being inclusive of cultural and spiritual practices. \nPresenters: \n\nHolly Prince\, Project Manager\, HBSW\, MSW\, (PhD. Cand.)\nJessica L. Wyatt\, Knowledge Broker\, BEd.\, MA\, PMP\nKassandra Fernandes\, Curriculum Developer\, HBSc\, MPH\, (Ph.D. Cand.)\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER
