SUMMARY:SRPC's Rural Reach Webinar - 'Performance Under Pressure'
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. Fil Gilic and Dr. Kavi Singh\, bring us “Performance Under Pressure” for the next Rural Reach Webinar. \nPlease note\, this is not an accredited event.\nFree for SRPC Members / $50 for General Admission\nDate: Thursday\, Aug 1\, 2024\nTime: 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)\n[click to convert to your local time]\nLocation: Zoom – The link will be in the confirmation email\nCan’t make it live? No worries! The session will be recorded and shared with registered attendees.\nDescription:\nPressure and acute stress can dismantle even the best of physicians. We will go over the physiology of stress and its effects on cognitive and physical performance; and the deliberate ways in which we can armour ourselves against its ill effects and “flip the script”- letting stress fuel our performance at times when it matters most. \nObjectives:\nReview a useful working model of human cognition. Review interactions between stress\, cognitive load and human performance. Use effective strategies to maintain cognitive performance in high-stress situations. \nPresenters:\nDr. Fil Gilic: Full time rural EM physician\, Kingston area\nSimulation Educator\, Queen’s University. Founder of RuralResus.com rural medical education website and courses. After a stint in the Canadian Forces as a paratrooper\, he tried to bike\, sail\, paddle and hike every type of environment he could find. He wandered the country as an itinerant ER doc until settling back to Kingston where he did his residency. He works in small towns around it while teaching across the nation. He tries to spend as much time in the outdoors with his two boys as he can muster. \nDr. Kavi Singh: Dr. Singh has worked for 25 years with the Inuit of Nunavik and the Cree of Eeyou Istchee (James Bay). From skidoo toboggan medevacs\, to unfreezing IV lines in his armpits in a twin otter\, he realized med school and residency didn’t quite prepare him for real life.  He has spent the last decade working on changing how acute care is approached and taught for austere environments.  Apart from paddling\, BJJ & being in the mountains\, he loves being with his young kids and wonderful wife.

SUMMARY:ECHO Session: Identifying People Who Would Benefit from a Palliative Approach
DESCRIPTION:Join the Canadian Home Care Association to discover how the early identification of individuals and implementing a palliative approach to care can change how people live and die. \nYou’ll learn to initiate crucial conversations on symptom management\, advance care planning\, and understanding a person’s values and culture. A team-based approach enhances care by addressing current needs and recognizing future ones. \nIdentifying individuals who would benefit from a palliative approach is essential because it ensures comprehensive\, holistic care for people living with life-limiting conditions. Early identification supports home care providers in having conversations with patients and their families that anticipate concerns about symptom management\, prompt discussions about advance care planning and create more opportunities to better understand a person’s values\, wishes and culture. It improves the effectiveness of interdisciplinary teams in planning care that considers not only a person’s present physical\, psychological\, social and emotional needs\, but also future needs which arise with advanced illness. \nIn our ECHO session\, you’ll discover how early identification for palliative care changes lives and deaths by ensuring comprehensive care for those with life-limiting conditions. You’ll learn to initiate crucial conversations on symptom management\, advance care planning\, and understanding patient values and culture. This approach enhanced team-based care by addressing current and future needs. A wrap-up quiz will engage participants in self-assessing on key elements of the Canadian Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Competency Framework necessary for early identification and integration of a palliative approach. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:ECHO Session: An Approach to Assessing Existential Distress
DESCRIPTION:Hosts: Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians (CSPCP) \nPresenters:\nDr. Anne Marie Krueger-Naug\, MD\, PhD\, FRCPC\, YAC (Palliative Care)\nProgram Director\, Adult Palliative Medicine\, Assistant Professor\, Dalhousie University \nDavid Maginley\, M.Div\, CSCP\nSpiritual Care Practitioner \nModerator:\nDr. Romayne Gallagher MD\, CCFP(PC)\, FCFP\nClinical Professor\, Division of Palliative Care\, UBC\nBoard Member\, CSPCP \nREGISTER HERE \nTarget Audience: Physicians from across Canada \nDescription: Existential distress is a term used when patients who are coming towards the end of their lives exhibit profound suffering\, related particularly to their thoughts on life and existence. Specifically\, it describes the reaction to that which threatens the integrity of a person’s identity. Little research has been done on the clinical expression of this phenomenon\, even though\, from diagnosis to eventual death\, existential issues quietly\, and sometimes overtly\, dominant a palliative patient’s experience. \nThis session aims to introduce physicians to the concept of existential distress and provide an approach to identify and clarify the different aspects of this distress experienced by the dying person. \nEarly identification can enable timely intervention\, such as counselling\, spiritual guidance\, and dignity therapy. Such supports have been found to increase quality of life in the terminal phase of a person’s illness. \nIn this session\, we will: \n\nidentify the indicators and nuances of existential distress through case examples.\nappreciate the functional role existential distress plays at the end of life\, when to refer to psychosocial/spiritual care\, and how to support the dying person if these specialist resources are in short supply.
